Why study together?

I love to study scripture together. Group bible study is deeply rooted in  the teachings of the Bible itself.

Mutual Encouragement and Accountability

When we gather to study God’s Word, we encourage one another and hold each other accountable in our walk of faith. I always leave my CBS group feeling supported and encouraged. Hebrews 10:24-25 urges believers to spur one another on towards love and good deeds and not to neglect meeting together. Being in community helps us to grow and remain steadfast in our faith.

Diverse Perspectives

Group bible study allows us to encounter different interpretations and applications of the same text, enriching our understanding. It’s great to have diversity of age experience and background in our group. Proverbs 27:17 states, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” This diversity can lead to deeper insights and a more comprehensive understanding of God’s Word.

Shared Wisdom

In a community, more experienced Christians can impart wisdom and guidance to newer believers. Titus 2:3-4 encourages older women to teach younger women, highlighting the importance of mentorship and communal growth. Newer believers share their wonder at the Word and help experienced believers not to take God’s Word or God himself for granted. How many times have I been encouraged by an insight from one of the younger people in a group!

Building Relationships

Group bible study fosters strong bonds among believers. I miss my group so much when I am away. It’s the group which brings me most comfort and strength. In Acts 2:46-47, we see the early church devoted to teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer. This practice of sharing scripture and life together builds community and strengthens the body of Christ.

Applying Scripture in Real Life

When we study the Bible in a group, we can discuss how to apply its truths to our personal lives. Ouch that is so true! Left to myself I am an expert in the fine art of reading but not putting into practice! James 1:22 reminds us to be doers of the Word, and discussing scripture collectively helps us to put faith into action.

Greater Impact in Ministry

United in faith and understanding, believers can work together to reach out to others with the message of Jesus. I love that our ministry grows and grows as we focus on the essentials of our faith and mostly Jesus! One of our group made conversation with a neighbour in the supermarket this weekend.  The new friend writes ‘Thank you so much for this invitation to the Bible Study. It appears to be just what I was looking for and I am so happy that I bumped into Anita and she stopped to chat.’ Matthew 18:20 promises that where two or three gather in His name, He is present, empowering their mission and witness.

In summary, group bible study not only enhances our understanding and application of God’s Word, but it also builds strong relationships and a unified body of believers that can effectively live out their faith together. As we pursue scripture collectively, we grow closer to God and each other, fulfilling the biblical call to unity in Christ.
